We have developed a list of FAQs to help you better understand scarring and how laser treatment for acne scars can help.

What Are Acne Scars?

Acne does not always leave scars, but some people may experience permanent marks after acne on their skin. Severe acne scarring can change the skin’s texture and appearance. Acne scars can be categorized into three types:

  • Boxcar scars – These are like craters or round pits in the skin
  • Ice-pick scars – These scars cause deep holes in the skin and resemble puncture marks
  • Rolling scars – These are thickened scar tissue that is shaped like ripples underneath the skin

Acne scarring is likely to occur if you have a severe condition with deep spots like nodules and cysts. Scaring is the healing response of the body to an infection or injury. Trauma that goes deep into the dermal tissue produces new tissue that forms scars on the skin’s surface. Scarring occurs when your body works hard to heal the wounds caused by acne. Besides this, you can also experience scarring if you pop, pick, or scratch your acne.

Acne scars can negatively impact your self-esteem and self-confidence. They can also make you avoid social interactions and meeting people. But don’t worry, it doesn’t always have to be that way. Acne scar laser treatment provides a suitable solution to lower the appearance of scars much needed to restore your confidence.

Types of Laser Treatments for Scars

Different laser therapies are available to treat mild to moderate and severe acne scarring. These include:

Ablative Laser Treatment

It removes a small skin patch around the scar. So, when the skin grows, it looks smoother and fresh. Ablative laser treatments are used on deep scars.

Non-Ablative Laser Treatment

This laser treatment improves the acne scar appearance without removing any skin. It focuses on stimulating collagen production, which helps with regeneration and natural healing. One popular non-ablative laser treatment procedure is the Erbium YAG.

It uses laser energy to target the water in the skin cells. They are vaporized to remove micro-layers of the skin. It creates micro-channels in the skin for new cell generation and collagen production, making the skin more youthful and smoother and noticeably reducing acne scarring.

Fractionated Laser Resurfacing

This non-ablative laser treatment breaks down the material that causes skin discoloration. The procedure makes the scar return to the same color as your skin.

How Long Do the Effects Last?

You can expect permanent results from ablative laser treatment for acne scars. However, the treatment effects depend on the severity of the acne scarring and how fast the skin heals.

Likewise, non-ablative or laser resurfacing can also provide permanent results but for mild scarring. Also, it can take a long time for the full effects of the laser treatment for acne scars to become visible.
