Vascular Constriction

Vascular constriction, also called a vasospasm, is the narrowing of the blood vessels resulting from the contraction of muscular wall of the vessels, especially the small arterioles and large arteries. The process is the opposite of vasodilation, which is the widening of blood vessels. The process is critical in controlling bleeding and reducing acute blood loss. When blood vessels constrict, blood flow is restricted or decreased, thus retaining body heat or increasing vascular resistance. This makes the skin paler because less blood reaches the surface, reducing heat radiation.
